PIMS forms new inquiry committee to probe nursery fire

ISLAMABAD, August 27, 2026: The Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) administration has formed a new four-member inquiry committee to investigate the fire incident at the hospital’s nursery, ARY News reported citing sources.

Professor Dr Atif Inam Shami has been appointed as the head of the inquiry committee, sources said. The committee comprises three senior PIMS professors along with Deputy Executive Director Dr Aneza Jaleel.

Professor Altaf Hussain from the ENT department and Professor Sajid Rafiq Abbasi from the Nephrology department have been appointed as members of the committee, sources said.

The inquiry committee will investigate the nursery fire and determine its final cause. It will also examine the fire safety arrangements around the nursery, sources said.

The committee will review the firefighting and rescue operation, including the response time of the rescue operation.

Sources said the PIMS inquiry committee will prepare its report within 48 hours.

Earlier, the administration of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Hospital released the identity of the 14 newborn babies who died in the devastating fire that broke out in the hospital’s nursery, along with details of the baby who was rescued alive.

According to the list issued by PIMS, 14 newborns lost their lives in the tragedy, while one baby was successfully rescued.

The deceased babies were identified as:

Newborn of Javeria (mother), Samiullah (father). Newborn of Alia (mother), Rashid (father). Newborn of Anisa (mother), Abdullah (father). Newborn of Aasia Bibi (mother),  Bahad (father) Newborn of Shakila (mother), Muhammad Tanveer (father) Newborn of Sidra (mother), Imran (father) Newborn of Sumbal (mother), Usman (father) Newborn of Kiran Fatima (mother), Muhammad Saad-ur-Rehman (father) Newborn of Amina (mother), Khurram (father) Newborn of Maria (mother), Qayyum (father) Newborn of Khizra (mother), Mudassar (father) Newborn of Hafsa, (mother), Ishtiaq (father) Newborn of Aroosa Saeed, (mother), Idrees Khan (father)

PIMS stated that the rescued newborn’s mother is Asifa and father is Waqas.
