Pakistan Army responds to unprovoked Afghan Taliban firing in Kurram

KURRAM: Pakistan’s security forces responded to unprovoked firing by the Afghan Taliban on Pakistani border posts in Kurram district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, security sources said.

According to the sources, security forces foiled an attempted infiltration by militants belonging to Fitna al-Khawarij from Afghanistan into Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Kurram sector.

The militants were operating under the supervision of the Afghan Taliban and attempted to cross the border from Afghanistan’s Nangarhar and Paktia provinces.

The sources said the infiltration attempt was effectively thwarted by Pakistani troops deployed along the border.

Following the failure of the infiltration attempt, Afghan Taliban forces opened fire on Pakistani border posts using heavy weapons, mortars and other arms, security souces said.

Pakistan Army responded with an effective and comprehensive retaliatory action, targeting several Afghan Taliban border posts, mortar positions and defensive positions with small and heavy weapons, including artillery.

The sources stated that several Afghan Taliban personnel fled, abandoning their positions following the Pakistani response.

Security forces remain on high alert and are closely monitoring the situation along the border, the sources said, adding that they are prepared to respond to any further provocation.

The latest exchange comes a day after Pakistan security forces carried out strikes against terrorist hideouts in the border region adjoining Afghanistan, in response to terror attacks in Khyber Pakhutnkhwa.

Information Ministry said on Monday that the Pakistan security forces targeted three sites linked to Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

The ministry further said the operation destroyed three militant compounds, including a training centre for suicide bombers, and killed 28 militants, including several suspected suicide bombers. Weapons and ammunition stored at the sites were also destroyed, it said.

The strikes followed intelligence-based operations in Kohat, Hangu and the surrounding areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on September 20, in which Pakistani authorities said nine militants were killed.
