ISLAMABAD: The government has sought more time from Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) regarding its demand to abolish the petroleum levy, following a meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and JI Chief Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman, ARY News reported, citing sources.
Sources said the government requested time from JI until the situation surrounding the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) long march is resolved.
The government assured the JI Chief that progress would be made toward addressing the party’s demands, asking Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman to grant them time while they manage the PTI long march issue. Sources added that another meeting between the two leaders is likely.
However, the JI Chief made it clear to the government that the party has no further time to waste.
The JI demanded concrete measures regarding the government’s promises, which include the complete abolition of the petroleum levy. The party stated that verbal assurances alone would not suffice and that the government must take practical steps to fulfill its commitments.
The JI is expected to announce its next course of action on October 7 during its Gaza March.
JI Chief Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman had previously paused the party’s long march after reaching Multan, following the Prime Minister’s assurance that he would address the matter upon returning to the country.
Prior to the long march, the JI had staged nationwide protest sit-ins that lasted for a month.
